About Utah
Many of our friends and family have questions about Utah – they’ve heard rumors, usually about Mormons or about beer. Perhaps on this page we can shed some light on the “Utah” situation…
MORMONS
These are very friendly people, and indeed, the predominant faith in Utah is the Latter Day Saints (Mormons). However, Salt Lake City has perhaps the LEAST percentage of Mormons in all of Utah, and is relatively progressive as far as diversity is concerned. But don’t be fooled – diversity still has a long way to go around here. To the point – Mormons are nice, and you’ll see many of them walking around downtown wearing white dress shirts.
SUNDAYS
Sundays are a church day, and it slows down bigtime – around downtown Salt Lake City especially. Of course the folks who aren’t Mormon find a lot to do out in the mountains and surrounding neighborhoods, but downtown Salt Lake City is relatively deserted with not many places to shop or eat other than Harmon’s (a cool grocery store where we shop) and a few foreign restaurants.
BEER
Utah beer laws always seem to make great small talk with travelers from out of state. Most importantly you need to know that all beer served on tap in the state of Utah is 4% (3.2% ABV) beer. If you find your favorite beer on tap it will likely taste a bit watered down. If you like craft beer, ask for the bottle menu and try something from some local breweries like Wasatch, Moab, Squatters, and our favorite, Epic. Finally, if you go somewhere that is registered as a “restaurant” you will be required to order food if you want to have a drink. If you go somewhere registered as a “tavern/bar” everyone in your party must be 21+ but you don’t have to eat food with your drinks.
